Hurricane Song by Paul Volponi is about Miles ( the main character) ,and Pops (his father). Throughout the story, their relationship grows stronger and stronger. In the beginning Pops looked like he cared more about his trumpet more then Miles. But in the end Pops shows that he does love Miles more then his Trumpet.
In the beginning of the book Pops didn't even know what sport Miles played. Miles asked for football equipment for his birthday but instead, Pops bought him a drum so he could be like him. Miles hatted that drum because it just reminded him about pop's music. Pops barley knew anything about Miles until they got to bond during Hurricane Katrina.
Miles and Pops start to bond during the middle of Hurricane Katrina. They start to get to know each other when havoc starts to rain. People start to form gangs like Caine and Dunham. Pops says he doesn't get in peoples business but after what he has seen he starts to help others out. When Cyrus commits suicide he helped his daughter and the police. After Cyrus's death Pops and Miles play the saints come marching in which really made them bond because miles did something that was a interest of Pops.
When Hurricane Katrina is finally over Pops and Miles work together to get to Pharaohs to see what was left of it. When they were in the water Pops grabbed Miles and his horn at the same time. Before that, Pops would grab the horn first then Miles. When they encounter a problem trying to get to Pharaohs, they work together. I think that the biggest bonding moment they had was when they reached Pharaohs. After they took down the robbers who tried to steal the piano Miles carried it back. I think that was the biggest moment because Pharaohs meant lot to Pops and seeing Miles carry it back made him proud.
In conclusion Miles and Pops start with a shaky relationship but end with a strong one in the end.
